An aim for educators is to enable their students to become independent learners. Whilst direct teaching plays a part in building understanding and knowledge, inquiry and self-directed learning through research becomes critical as students scaffold their skills and build their ability to think and learn for themselves. As students are enabled to do this they begin to own the learning. Indeed they will teach themselves full units of work. This is student agency.
